Introduction to Vipassana Meditation
Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal remedy for universal ills, an Art of Living. To those who are not familiar with Vipassana Meditation we recommend visiting the international Vipassana website for an introduction.

To Apply for a Course
To learn Vipassana Meditation one needs to develop one's own experience during a residential ten day course. To apply for a course find a convenient date in the Course schedule and click on the link for the date. This will take you to the Introduction to the Technique, the Code of Discipline, the Daily Timetable and the Application Form.

All ten-day courses begin on the evening of the first day and end on the morning of the last day.

Ten-day Courses are held at hired facilities in the Byron Bay/Lismore area. There are generally two ten day courses held per year at this venue. See the Course schedule.

Introductory Talks and Events
Public talks and screenings of videos about Vipassana Meditation are often organised in the Northern Rivers area in the weeks leading up to a ten day course. These events are generally publicised in community announcements in regional newspapers and radio station broadcasts, and via publicity posters.

About Northern Rivers Vipassana
Northern Rivers Vipassana is a voluntary association based in the Northern Rivers area of N.S.W, Australia, which is dedicated to supporting the learning and practice of Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N Goenka.

More information on the worldwide movement of Vipassana Meditation can be found on the international Vipassana Meditation website.

Northern Rivers Vipassana has formed an official Trust and is looking for land for a Centre between Byron Bay and Lismore. The plan is to have a meditation centre operational in the next few years.

Local Activities for Old Students, who have already completed at least one ten day course in the tradition of S.N. Goenka, include weekly group meditations held in Lismore, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby, and a One Day course held every month in Byron Bay. Contact details for NRV are at the bottom of this page.

Course Finances
Courses are run solely on a donation basis. There are no charges for the courses, not even to cover the cost of food and accommodation. All expenses are met by donations from those who have completed a course, experienced the benefits of Vipassana, and wish to give others the same opportunity. Neither the Teacher nor the Assistant Teachers receive remuneration; they and those who organise the courses volunteer their time.
